Frequently Asked Questions

Pilates is low impact training so is highly recommended to people who can’t do high intensity training such as running or jumping activities.

Many people benefit from pilates, for example, the injured, pregnant or recovering from pregnancy, people who are getting further into life and need to be more gentle on their joints but want to remain active and build strength for life and to feel good whilst doing life.

We recommend to people who are starting fitness or getting back into fitness to start with pilates as it teaches you how to exercise safely and effectively.

Pilates can also benefit athletes and people who are already fit, as it focuses on building core strength so it can enhance their training or sporting endeavors, as you learn to utilise your body at a much deeper level which has shown to reduce injuries.

It’s a legitimate question. If you have back issues or pain, you’re not the only one wondering if you can safely do Pilates.

Many physiotherapists recommend that their clients with back problems take up Pilates, as it will help to strengthen your core muscles and potentially improve spine mobility.

Pilates is a wonderful exercise option for people who have a history of back problems but who are now free from pain and ready to exercise. Anyone with a back problem that is Postural can really reap the benefits of Pilates.

I highly recommend listening to your body and never push through if you are feeling pain in your back. Start slow and gentle and focus on quality rather than quantity.

If you focus heavily on correcting your posture, getting your breath right and working on connecting to your deep core muscles this will set you up with an amazing foundation to really help you with your back injury. It is so important to learn how to hold your spine so ensure that you do the introductory lesson before you start, as this can really help a lot.

Yes absolutely once you get medical clearance from your health professional.

You may need to modify some of the exercises to suit your growing belly and focus on taking your time. The exercises are low impact but if you don’t feel right then either rest or change it to suit so you feel good.

You should never feel strain or pain – At Shoes Off Living we focus on connection to your breath and posture which can really help throughout your pregnancy and beyond.

Once you have had your baby, once you get your medical clearance to start exercising again. Pilates is a great way to recover and to help strengthen your pelvic floor and surrounding core muscles to support recovery and to help build your strength safely.

Our classes are under 15 minutes so we recommend getting your pilates in 5 days a week but you will notice the difference in 2-3 classes a week.

Furthermore, it depends on your goals and what you would like to achieve and how much time you have to practice your pilates but you will benefit hugely if you can do your practice throughout the week as this can help to engage your muscles more deeply and effectively in everyday life. Our classes are designed to be a complete program so you will also have recovery days in your journey to help you feel great!

You will start noticing your body awareness increases and you become more present within yourself, then you will start feeling more confident and connected and within a few months you will notice you are becoming stronger and more toned and energised.

The saying from the creator of pilates is “You will feel better in ten sessions, look better in twenty sessions, and have a completely new body in thirty sessions.” I hope you have an amazing journey and we cannot wait to hear all about it! Most importantly, have fun. That’s what this is all about.

Simple answer – whenever it suits your routine. I would recommend doing it as early as possible in the day so that you feel great that you have done something and you can always do another class later in the day if you have the time. If you are going to set your alarm 15 minutes early before you normally start the day, then to feel more motivated, get prepared the night before getting your workout clothes ready (you can do it in your Pyjamas if you wish) to ensure you are ready to go.

This journey is all about needing just yourself, a mat (or towel is fine too) and your shoes off living membership – you can connect this with your phone, computer or tv. Feel free to go and join us in nature, if possible too otherwise you will get your dose with us.

10 minutes of Pilates per day can be enough. Joseph Pilates, the creator of this exercise, said you should do Pilates for 10 minutes daily and see the most benefits when you do it every day.

Beginners usually start at 10 minutes, but you can slowly increase your workout time – you can also design your workouts to suit what you need that day – for example, a strength training class followed by a stretch class. You have access to our growing library of classes so feel free to utilise to suit your needs and your goals.
